Adenoviruses are common pediatric pathogens which are responsible for a wide variety of infectious syndromes. While adenoviral infection results in self-limited disease in the majority of immunocompetent children, it can result in life-threatening illness in immunocompromised hosts. The highest incidence of adenoviral infection occurs in children between the ages of 6 months and 5 years, although outbreaks have been noted when susceptible hosts congregate together such as among military recruits, adolescents at summer camp, and sometimes nursing home residents.
