IT has been shown by Quastel & Wheatley [1933] that the addition of a variety of amines, including tyramine and isoamylamine, to brain tissue respiring in a glucose-phosphate medium results in a fall in the rate of 02 uptake by the tissue. The oxidations of glucose, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and glutamic acid by brain were found to be markedly inhibited by exposure of the tissue to such amines. Succinic acid oxidation is not impaired, however, except in the case of brain tissue exposed to tyramine. In this case a large fall in the rate of succinic acid oxidation takes place.
