Improved compatibility relations between the exponents α₀ and α₁ governing x-ray threshold shapes are obtained using (i) the calculated phase shifts δₗ of a self-consistent screened potential for l≥2 and (ii) interpolation formulas for the l≥2 contribution to Friedel's sum rule. These relations, when applied to recent electron energy-loss data for Li, show that the predicted many-body x-ray threshold effect is either very weak or absent.
