A method of identification of isomeric polychlorobiphenyls via B/E linked scans of metastable molecular ions has been investigated. A total of 31 polychlorobiphenyls (mono, di-, tri- and tetra-chlorobiphenyls) was investigated. Isomeric compounds were found to be thus distinguishable from one another. Features of the linked scan spectra could be correlated with the absorption wavelengths of the ultraviolet A-bands. Application of the method to analysis of a mixture of polychlorobiphenyls of microbial origin is described.
