The luminescence phenomenon represents an extremely versatile and sensitive means whereby the physical behaviour of polymers may be examined at the molecular level. This review initially describes the ‘tools of the trade’ (the parameters which, in combination, confer high degrees of selectivity upon the technique) prior to discussion of their use. The account is illustrated by examples drawn mainly from the author's laboratory and includes applications of energy transfer, excimer formation and anisotropy experiments.
