The author proposes a new interpretation of the interaction between the 2 Sigma 1/2 + and 2 Pi 1/2 electronic resonance states of hydrogen halide anions which has been observed in recent experiments on dissociative electron attachment to HBr. The two resonances are shown to interact in second order via electronic coupling to the non-resonant scattering continuum. The magnitude of the effect increases with increasing spin-orbit mixing between the states.
