Summary A definition of talipes is suggested, and it is maintaned that if this definition is accepted and the different varieties of talipes analysed it can be demonstrated that the deformity is the result of moulding by mechanical forces in utero. Three regular varieties of talipes and an unlimited number of irregular ones are described.
