The mathematical form of a time–height sea-level curve representing intermediate-frequency fluctuations superimposed on an underlying upward trend yields a simple method for estimating the minimum amplitude of fluctuations from field measurements of the thickness of silt–peat couplets. Drawing on data from the Thames Estuary and the Fenland Basin, fluctuations of relative sea-level with minimum amplitudes between 0.08 m and 0.91 m seem to have occurred in the southeast British region during the mid-Flandrian.
