Experimental study demonstrates that adding low-density polyethylene improves polypropylene extrusion and heat sealing, indicating potential for easy-peel packaging films.
In the present study, we investigated the effect of low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) on the T‐die extrusion processability and heat‐sealing properties of polypropylene (PP) with structural characterization. LDPE provided strain‐hardening in transient elongational viscosity, which increased the film width, that is, reduced the neck‐in level. It also greatly affected heat sealing. At low sealing temperatures, the peel strengths of the blend films were higher than those of the PP film. In contrast, after sealing at high temperatures, the blend films had low peel strengths owing to localized deformation initiated from the phase boundary. These results indicate that PP/LDPE films can be used as easy‐peel films with good processability.
