Computational modeling study demonstrates high-accuracy shelf space allocation using deterministic grass-mower heuristics, suggesting efficient inventory placement under strict storage constraints.
We investigate the problem of shelf space allocation in a warehouse with horizontal and vertical product categories, where there are some products requiring separate storage. Such restrictions for products are usually determined based on safety, product security, and compliance with relevant rules and regulations. The proposed model finds its application in products with different chemical compatibility, temperature, humidity, and lighting requirements. We develop the new mower heuristics with two variants of internal sorting rules. Nine parameters were implemented to reduce the solution space and generate a relatively profitable solution without random elements or exploring the entire solution space. The quality of the achieved solutions was no less than 98.98% compared to the optimal solution found by a commercial solver. Optimal solutions were found for the majority of instances by heuristics.
