A simulation and an experimental study of the determination of the first five moments of a chromatographic signal shows that it is possible to improve largely the precision and acccuracy of the measurements by adjusting an exponential on the peak tall and deriving the moments from the sum of the signal integration in a rather narrow time window (corresponding to a signal 10-2 to 10-3 times the peak maximum) and of a correction calculated from the characteristics of the exponential delay. A precision of 20 to 50% on the fourth moment for a time constant between 1 and 3 σ and an accuracy of a few percent for the average value of 10 measurements can be achieved with chromatograms such that the signal-to-noise ratio exceeds a few hundreds. The precision and accuracy of lower moments is correspondingly better. This result of course is possible only with precisely controlled equipment.
