Extension of considerations of high-β toroidal equilibria allows calculation of the destabilizing m = 1 force on a straight axisymmetric, bumpy plasma column. The modification of the bumpy equilibrium by a weak longitudinal current is determined. The m = 1 mode becomes helical and can be stabilized when the current is oscillated.
