High-resolution ( approximately=0.003 AA) spectra of H 2 S in the vacuum ultraviolet are reported. A prominent d Rydberg series can be followed up to n=26 and allows an accurate determination of the first ionisation potential of H 2 S 84420.00+or-2 cm -1 . This d series exhibits an intensity anomaly at about 1200 AA which is assigned to an interchannel perturbation. Spectroscopic differences between H 2 O and H 2 S are enumerated and rationalised in terms of the natures of the core holes and the molecular ion geometries.
