The distribution of red cells, plasma and blood volume in the wall of the small intestine and in the colon was determined by means of 51Cr‐labelled red cells and 125I‐labelled serum albumin. It was demonstrated that the submucosal tissue layer was the most vascularized. Assuming a total blood content in the intestinal and colonic wall of 5 ml blood/100 g tissue, the regional blood content in the submucosa could be calculated to 10–20 ml/100 g tissue, while the blood content of the mucosa and muscularis amounted to approximately 3 ml/100 g.
