The proposal has been made that the free energy of a mixture is (aside from the free energy of mixing) equal to the sum of the free energies of the pure components computed at a reduced temperature and reduced volume characteristic of the environment of the molecules in the solution. This proposal is tested for a simple model, the generalized cell model for solutions, and found to be a good approximation.
