An antenna in a metallic photonic bandgap structure consisting of metallic wires embedded in a dielectric host medium is considered. An explicit method is developed to quickly calculate the radiation pattern for such an antenna system. The influence of the dielectric constant and the location of the dielectric–air interface on the radiation pattern is studied. Numerical results for the directivity and radiation pattern are presented and compared with those obtained by the finite-difference time-domain method.
