Effects of anode surface structure on the extracted ion beams from a magnetically insulated diode are examined. Experimental results can be explained qualitatively with two kinds of contributions. The one is the probability of surface flashover, and the other is the energy dissipation according to the capacitance change in diode which affects the production of the anode plasma. Another contribution must be introduced for the case of a refrigerated H2O ion source.
