Adhesion between polymers and other solids is predominately caused by dispersion, acid‐base, and electrical double layer forces. An overview is given on characterization of these force components by electrokinetic measurements. The theoretical approaches used, fields of application and apparative facilities are described. It has been shown that the most important force components acting in adhesion systems can be characterized by zeta‐potential measurements as well as the influence of adsorption layers on these forces. Therefore, results of electrokinetic measurements can be applied to control technical important adhesion phenomena.
