The photoplastic effect (PPE) is studied in n- and p-type CdTe crystals and a negative as well as a positive PPE is observed. Plastic deformation, rapid cooling of annealed samples from high temperatures, and an increase in illumination results in a transition from positive to negative PPE. The spectral and temperature dependences of the PPE are studied. Two models for the PPE in CdTe are proposed: for the case when dislocation motion is determined by interaction with local obstacles and for the case when dislocation motion is controlled by double kink nucleation.
