This paper cxarnined the extent to which premarital cohabitation explained marital dissolution among women agcd 18 to 49, using data from the 1984 Canadian Fertility Survey. Women whose marriages were preceded by cohabitation were more likely to break their maniagcs. Further, frequent attenden of church services were less likely to report marital disruption, even after other sociodemographic variables werc controlled. The findings indicated some support for the hypothesis that determinants of marital dissolution differ between Quebecers and their counterparts in the rcst of the country
