Everyone is familiar with the striking variations in the size and shape of the erythrocytes in pernicious and severe secondary anemias in which a wide variety of abnormal red cells may be seen but without the predominance of any one form. This is not true for all blood disturbances, however, for instances are recorded in the literature in which there have been observed quite characteristic variations in the shape of the erythrocytes with a preponderance...(1) Herrick JB, Peculiar Elongated and Sickle-Shaped Red Blood Corpuscles in a Case of Severe Anemia.
