A new aromatic diamine containing benzimidazole rings, 2,2′‐di‐p‐aminophenyl‐5,5′‐bibenzimidazole, was prepared by the condensation of 3,3′‐diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride with p‐aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid. The diamine was subjected to polycondensation with dicarboxylic acid chlorides in dimethylacetamide to form polyamides. These polyamides showed excellent thermal stability.
