Poly(phenylene carboxylate) and the corresponding copolyesters were prepared respectively by homopolycondensation of m‐ and p‐hydroxybenzoyl chlorides and by condensation of a mixture of acid chlorides of ortho‐ and para‐hydroxy benzoic acids. These polyesters which did not undergo Fries rearrangement were hydroyzed to acid monomers on treatment with hot aqueous acid solution. The copolyesters were characterized and compared with the corresponding homopolyesters.
