The Dirac equation in the algebraic approximation. I. Criteria for the choice of basis functions and minimum basis set calculations for hydrogenic atoms

Criteria for the choice of basis functions for the solution of the Dirac equation in a finite basis set are derived from considerations of matrix products involving the Dirac kinetic energy. Minimum basis set calculations for the ground state of the hydrogen atom are described.
