The diagnosis of neurotic excoriations (n.ex.) is evaluated on the background of a multifactorial controlled investigation, covering 68 patients with the primary form of this disease. Demographic, dermatologic, and clinical psychiatric characteristics of n.ex. may be exclusive but in far the greatest number of cases can only be recognized by “broad‐spectrum” evaluation of anamnestic and clinical data. Patch testing seems to be the most relevant supplementary laboratory test, while determination of IgE in serum can have a directive value.
