The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which 24 retirement‐aged women defined and experienced leisure. Semistructured face‐to‐face interviews were conducted with women aged between 56 and 83 years. Constant comparison and grounded theory methods were used throughout the study (Strauss & Corbin, 1998 a; 1998b). Several themes emerged, two were discussed: (a) definitions of leisure: leisure as social and leisure as individual; and (b) influences on leisure: life stage, constraints, and enablers. A poststructural feminist analysis and a life course perspective informed the interpretation of the data. A grounded theoretical model of leisure for these women was proposed.
