Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) in presence of a catalytic amount of anhydrous zinc chloride silylates efficiently and selectively different types of alcohols and phenols in refluxing acetonitrile or benzene-acetonitrile. This reagent in presence of anhydrous zinc chloride discriminates absolutely amines and thiols from alcohols.
