The temperature dependence of the ultrasonic amplitude σϵ(T) at a constant level of reversible dislocation strain is derived from the data on the amplitude-dependent internal friction. Comparing σϵ(T) with the temperature dependence of the macroscopic yield stress σc(T) reveals that σϵ(T) is proportional to σc(T) within the temperature range of 4.2 to 300K for a large variety of crystals. The reasons for this proportionality are discussed in terms of (i) a general mechanism of thermally activated dislocation motion for both micro-and macro-deformations and (ii) a universal stressinduced mechanism (not thermally activated) which itself is temperature-dependent.
