In 1931 and 1933, James (1 to 3) reported the first work on the prophylactic activity of the standard antimalarial agents, quinine, quinacrine (atabrine), and pamaquin (plasmochin), in Plas- modium vivax malaria under controlled conditions. He demonstrated that neither quinine nor quinacrine, given as prophylactic agents in therapeutic doses, prevented malarial infection. Extensive ex- perience in the field (4 to 6) has corroborated this finding.
