Nerve growth factor binds to TrkA receptors on axon terminals, generating a survival signal that is propagated along the axon to the cell body of the neuron. In their Perspective, [Miller and Kaplan][1] discuss exciting new findings ([MacInnis and Campenot][2]) demonstrating that nerve growth factor does not have to be internalized with its receptor for the survival signal to be retrogradely transported along the axon to the neuronal cell body.
