A series of high temperature hydrogenolyses‐hydrogenations of kraft lignin in water, organic solvents and aqueous alkali using a variety of catalysts were run. The liquefaction and distillation yields for the resulting products were measured. The products from these reactions were characterized by titration for acidic materials, elemental analyses, catechol content, ultraviolet absorption, and NMR.
