A microprocessor-controlled multichannel photon counting system with 4096 channels and a time resolution of 2.5 ns per channel is represented. The system uses high-speed ECL circuits in the first stage. Data are transferred by a microprocessor into an intermediate histogram data buffer. Additionally the microprocessor provides an interface to an HP 1000 minicomputer. The multichannel photon counter is applied in a time-resolved optical spectroscopy experiment with a pulsed laser system to investigate highly excited exciton systems in silver halide crystals.
