The coincidence width in electron-particle coincidence experiments is investigated in detail. It is shown that, since the advent of channel plates replacing channeltrons, the major contribution comes from different flight paths inside the electron energy analysers. Two different methods are presented for compensating this time spread; in a first experimental application a reduction by more than a factor of 6 in the coincidence width was achieved.
