Summary The analysis of plant competition experiments in which all possible pairs ofpgenotypes are grown in replacement series is discussed. Two methods of analyses, using models of de Wit (1960) and Gleeson & McGilchrist (1980), are compared. The two approaches, which are shown to be linked algebraically, complement each other in terms of agronomic interpretation.
