The laser- and double-beam optical absorption of solids is investigated theoretically as a function of laser power. Below the saturation limit enhancement of the laser optical absorption coefficient is predicted, due to the modification of the electronic structure. The 'double-beam' absorption coefficient is shown to allow the experimental determination of the transition matrix elements.
