The absence of molecular oxygen completely inhibits photodynamic hemolysis but does not inhibit the hemolytic action of the non-irradiated dye. The two phenomena are thus dependent upon different fundamental mechanisms. 2. Cyanide does not inhibit hemolysis either by the irradiated or non-irradiated dye. Thus the respiratory mechanisms of the cell, with the exception of the aërobic dehydrases, cannot play a part in the production of photodynamic hemolysis.
