Describes the design and performance of a uniform electric field analyser used in the second-order focusing mode. Such an analyser is particularly suitable for the study of charge exchange to the continuum (CEC) and other ionisation processes where it is necessary to separate an electron signal from an ion beam moving with similar velocity. As an example of the use of the analyser a study of the characteristic cusp obtained in CEC is discussed.
