This paper considers what might be considered to be the fundamentals of Drama in Education practices and explores how they are used in a range of different contexts, beyond the classroom. Role play is examined in the light of what is termed ‘real play’ by Robert Anderson, a medical practitioner who trains diabetes counsellors. This leads to a reappraisal of what is ‘real’ in role play.
