The magnetisation and the axial anisotropy of thulium have been measured with a vibrating sample magnetometer in the paramagnetic, the ferromagnetic, the c axis modulated and the ferrimagnetic antiphase domain structures. A mean field model which takes full account of the strong crystal field is described and the calculations are compared with experiment.
