A fast chopper is used to set up a mechanical Q-switched CO2 laser and pulse trains of repetitively Q-switched generation are recorded. We put special emphasis on the effect of the non-laser vibro-rotational levels on describing the dynamic processes of this laser. The calculated pulse waveforms based on the vibro-rotational model are in good agreement with the experiment.
