Experimental study demonstrates a compact circularly polarized offset reflector for Ku-band communications, highlighting its suitability for small satellites and disaster-relief VSAT terminals.
This paper presents the design and analysis of a compact circularly polarized offset parabolic reflector for Ku-Band satellite and VSAT applications. The waveguide antenna which acts as a feed source consists of Nabla slot (NS) on its aperture to generate the Left-hand circular polarization (LHCP). The electrical dimension of the waveguide antenna is 2.29λ × 1.01λ × 2.1λ at 14 GHz. Furthermore, the antenna design is easy to fabricate. The measurement results of the prototyped waveguide antenna show that the impedance matching ranges (S11 ≤ −10 dB) from 12 to 15.2 GHz and axial ratio ≤3 dB from 13.2 to 15.2 GHz. The proposed waveguide antenna is used as a feed source for an offset parabolic reflector with small f/RD ratio of 0.25. The reflector diameter of 10 cm was selected to ensure the antenna system can be accommodated within a small satellite volume, while the 80 cm diameter configuration, also with the same f/RD ratio, extends these capabilities to VSAT Ku-band applications for post-disaster communication. The design's suitability for Ku-band satellite applications was assessed via measurements and for VSAT applications using HFSS software simulations.
