Keyes' correlation implies that the ratio of any linear combination of elastic constants for one member of the cubic IV → III–V → II–VI series of materials to the same combination for another member is always the same. In general this is not true. However, there is a good correlation of elastic constant combinations corresponding to the pure longitudinal modes of the cubic III–V → II–VI compounds. Certain correlations between the pure shear mode elastic constants have also been found.
