A second fullerene “Saturn”, C50Cl10, has been prepared in a graphite arc-discharge process conducted with small amount of CCl4 in the inert-gas atmosphere. This is the first stable smaller fullerene derivative to be prepared and fully characterized (see structure). Its existence has implications for the mechanism of fullerene formation.
