Silver sulphadiazine was introduced to the Royal Perth Hospital burns unit in 1969 for the topical treatment of the burn wound. Since this date, a total of 63 patients with major burns have been treated with silver sulphadiazine, with quite remarkable results in the eradication of infection from the burn wound. This paper describes the method of application of silver sulphadiazine, and the results obtained in the management of these patients with major burns, especially in regard to the almost total eradication of Pseudomonas pyocyanea from the burns of these patients.
