By Gordon Francis London: Butterworths Scientific Publications. Pp. vii + 300. Price 60s. The author makes it clear in his introduction that he has not attempted to follow the usual treatment given in books on ionization in gases and which normally follow a fairly regular and standard pattern, starting with single collision processes and working up to the glories of glows, arcs and sparks via a description of statistical processes in swarms. Dr. Francis in the present work has chosen in a most interesting way to provide a very brief introduction to fundamental matters and then to proceed with fairly detailed descriptions of rather special subjects in the field of gaseous discharges.
