The effect of broiler age on abdominal fat was studied in 160 male and female birds from two commercial broiler strains. Live body weights as well as the thickness of the peri-intestinal fat were recorded. Three-way factorial analysis of variance, simple regression, and correlation analyses were carried out. All body traits were significantly affected by sex and age but not by strain. Highly significant (P<.01) correlations were obtained between live weight and fat weight, live weight and percent abdominal fat, and fat weight and fat thickness; correlation between age and percent abdominal fat was significant (P<.05). It appears that the proportion of fat in the body is influenced by body weight and not age. Fat estimation on carcasses can be done by peri-intestinal fat thickness and body weight gives a good indication of body fat in the live chicken.
