X-ray diffuse scattering due to the orientational disorder of NO 3 - ions in cubic phase of NH 4 NO 3 is investigated with photographic and counter methods. It is found that the observed disklike diffuse maxima are explained by 12-orientation model. Matsubara's theory is applied to the analysis and a local order defined by five parameters is determined. The local order slightly deviates from what is expected from an idea of the atomic packing. The configurational entropy is calculated from five parameters by the method of Y. Takagi and the result is not incompatible with the calorimetric measurement.
