It is shown by contrast experiments that more than 95% of the dislocation loops observed in quenched aluminium (99·995% Al) have a Burgers vector 1/3<111> rather than 1/2<110>. This finding is confirmed by annealing experiments. The observation of large, faulted loops of dislocation in zonerefined aluminium (99·9999% Al), or in aluminium of 99·995% purity after oil quenching, is then simply explained.
