An novel wideband Ka-band substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) slot antenna is proposed in this paper. The antenna has an ultra-low profile (only about 2.5% of the operating wavelength). Slot and cavity resonators are introduced simultaneously to extend impedance bandwidth. The result demonstrates that the antenna can operate in 30.25–33.16 GHz (about 9% of the fractional bandwidth). Unlike the traditional slot antenna, the backward radiation of this SIW slot antenna is suppressed due to the existence of the ground plate. A good linear polarization characteristic is also obtained. The antenna is very suitable for RF front-end system-on-package (SoP) design in millimeter wave application.
