A Q-device modified into a magnetic de Laval nozzle is used to produce a supersonic caesium plasma. It is shown that the plasma in such an experimental set-up can be described by a simple adiabatic theory. The characteristic parameters of a stationary supersonic flow are calculated both for the collisional and the collisionless case. The ion saturation currents measured with Langmuir probes at various positions along the magnetic nozzle are found to be in agreement with the theoretically expected thermal ion fluxes.
